Kihei Vacation Tips Ready to Book?

Thanks for all your questions on social media about taking a Kihei vacation in my condo in the Hale Kamaole complex. I compiled some of my answers.

Why a Kihei Vacation

Kamaole Beach 2 with an outrigger canoe, South Kihei, Maui

I could probably write for days about Kihei! Kihei is on the dry side of the island. Haleakala blocks a lot of moisture from hitting the Kihei/Wailea side of the island. This also means the waves are more manageable making this side a great spot for boogie boarding and snorkeling. While snorkeling it is not at all unusual to see sea turtles. They are in abundance in this area.

Kihei is a somewhat less touristy, quieter side but each year, as people discover it, it becomes a little more busy. Kihei is very walkable, with lots of little shops, restaurants, and bars. There are multiple public beaches fronting Kihei including Kamaole 1, Kamaole 2, Kamaole Point, and Kamaole 3.

Hale Kamaole Condo

My condo is across from Kamaole 3 and very near the boat launch where some dive boats go out. The condo is on the second floor. On the main level is a bedroom with twin beds and wall AC, one bathroom, laundry, kitchen, dining, living room and lanai. From the lanai you can see the sunrise over the slopes of Haleakala and sunsets over the ocean. Upstairs is the master bedroom, master bathroom, and a loft with a queen bed.

The Hale Kamaole complex has two pools, one reserved for families, the other for adults. There are also tennis courts and big grassy areas. You will see whole families come out in the evening and sit on the grass to watch the sunset.

Kihei Vacation Tips

What to bring or buy? Most people rent a car. Many travelers to the island leave the rental car place and head straight for Costco or Walmart to stock up on things they will need for their stay. Either one is a great place to get some basics so you don’t have to eat out as often.

I suggest some breakfast staples, snack items, and some beverages. There is a grocery story, Safeway, as you enter Kihei on Pi’lkei Ave closer to the condo.

You may want to bring snorkeling gear, or you can rent it on the island. If you are arriving between the end of October and the end of April, it is Whale Season! I highly suggest a Pacific Whale Foundation whale watching tour if you haven’t already been on one! And check out the Humpback Whale Experience at the Maui Ocean Center at Maalaea Harbor.
